Monday, May 19 -- The Rockbridge County High School boys soccer team suffered a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Valley District power Turner Ashby on Senior Night in Lexington.
Bennett Wilburn scored the game winner from an Ayden Van Horn assist with just over five minutes to play as the Knights (14-1 overall, 11-1 district) survived a fierce challenge from the Wildcats (2-11, 1-11).
Daniel Hernandez had given TA a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute. But RC equalized on a fabulous set piece just over a minute later, with Gene Kahler curling in a strike from outside the 18-yard box after collecting Noah Carroll's layoff.
Eliot McDonald recorded 13 saves in goal for the Wildcats, while Isaac Arenas made four stops for the Knights.
Prior to the contest, RC honored its senior class: Carroll, Kahler, McDonald, Yusuf Aliyev, Bryce Bell, Ethen Camden, Paul Drumbl, Oscar Kosky and Juan Rodriguez.
The Wildcats will return to the pitch at Rocktown on Tuesday, with action slated for a 7 p.m. start.
