BV Officials Announce Contest Winner
Buena Vista’s town square – several years in the making and nearing completion – now has a name. The public square at the northwest corner of Magnolia Avenue and 21st Street will hereafter be known as Magnolia Square.
In a citywide vote that began in February and ended April 30, Magnolia Square emerged as the winner from among the three nominated finalists. Green Valley Junction and Piccadilly Commons were the other two names that were considered.
“The name Magnolia Square draws inspiration from its location on Magnolia Avenue and the enduring character of the magnolia tree,” said Kristina Ramsey, Buena Vista economic development director. “It reflects the charm, values and aspirations of Buena Vista, envisioning the space as a welcoming place where the community can come together, celebrate and make lasting memories together.”
A colorful outdoor mural commissioned by the city is being painted at Magnolia Square this week by Covington- based artist Cheyenne Renne. The mural features several outdoor elements such as the Blue Ridge Mountains, a kayaker on the river, different types of birds, blooming magnolia flowers and a hiker gazing out over the valley.
“Bold colors and flowing imagery bring the scene to life, bringing the previously blank wall into a dynamic visual landmark,” said Ramsey. She explained that Renne, who is on a personal mission to paint a mural in all 50 states, was selected for her nature-driven style and community-focused approach to public art.
“This mural brings together everything we love about Buena Vista – our outdoor beauty, our active lifestyle, and now, a powerful sense of place in Magnolia Square,” said Jen Carpenter, Main Street Buena Vista executive director.
The naming initiative was the result, said Ramsey, “of a true community effort, with residents contributing name ideas rooted in local history and personal stories, and coming together to vote and decide on a name that will represent this vibrant new chapter in our city.”
She continued: “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part in this process and helped shape this important chapter in our story. Your input has been invaluable in creating a space that truly belongs to all of us.”
Magnolia Square is the culmination of communitywide efforts over a multi-year period to create a gathering place in the heart of downtown Buena Vista. Timber framers came to town last spring to erect a pavilion and again this past fall to build the stage. A seating plaza is among the remaining components that will soon be taking shape.
The community project has been the beneficiary of grants, city appropriations and private donations, including those that came in as part of the naming contest. The Farmers Market has kicked off the 2025 season, bringing weekly Thursday events to the space.
