High Bridge

Esther Pennington, 540-291-2629 Mothers’ Day at High Bridge Presbyterian Church began with Lea Braford’s Sunday school class making Mother’s Day cards and distributing them at the church entry to our mothers. We enjoyed many visitors this Sunday, including Martha Sherlin, her daughter and fiancé Jane Wagner and her daughter Lisa (Kathy Gilbert’s mother and sister); son Josh, Rachel, and grandson Wayne Wyatt Powell visiting Johnny and Peggy Powell; Dianne Rakes of Salem visiting parents Lloyd and Esther Pennington; Merri Willis, of Lynchburg the daughter of the Rev. Steve and Amy Willis.

Charlie Williamson, our faithful visiting Virginia Military Institute rugby team captain, was recognized this Sunday as a special graduate from our congregation and was awarded a honorary gift from the scholarship committee as he graduates from VMI with his commission as second lieutenant and begins his military career stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. Charlie was also recently selected to play in the NCR Men’s College All-Star Championship representing the Mid-Atlantic Sharks.

High Bridge combined the two adult Sunday school classes (for month of May only) into a new adult Sunday school class with the pastor’s wife, the Rev. Dr. Amy Willis, as a very knowledgeable teacher. She is an ordained minister and a professor at Lynchburg College. This class continues for two weeks and will finish on the May 25. Regular Sunday school classes will finish on the May 18 and we will begin our summer schedule and start worship service at 10 a.m. on June 1 and continue the new hours until fall.

The afternoon circle met this past Tuesday at the home of Sue Braford in Lexington for Bible study and a nice luncheon.

The Men’s Bible study meets today at 5:30 in the fellowship hall.

Scholarship Sunday will be observed May 18.

The food pantry will open promptly at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, May 15, and close at 11 a.m. The High Bridge congregation is collecting boxed macaroni and cheese for the food pantry for May.
