Testing May 30
Those of you planning to do some home canning this season can have your pressure canners tested for proper function by Virginia Cooperative Extension agent Becky Gartner. She will be at the Rockbridge Farmers Cooperative retail location at 645 Waddell St., Lexington, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 30. Dial gauge canners need to be tested every year to make sure the gauge is accurate, and you process your canned goods correctly. This is a free service.
Spring fever is a common ailment among gardening enthusiasts, and many of us have had symptoms since February. This year’s gorgeous spring, and higher than normal temperatures, has most folks thinking of their gardens, fruit trees, and berries. Not only the opportunity to consume them fresh, but also the anticipation of the work and fun of home canning; a great tradition in many Rockbridge homes.
For some families, home canning connects them with beloved family members through cherished recipes and memories of hard work accomplished together. This year can also be an opportunity to start new traditions in your family and adorn the shelves with beautifully preserved local produce.
Ms. Gartner can also answer questions related to canning and will have free printed publications on home canning. A pressure canner is not necessarily required for successful home canning, but it can improve canning success rates. Plan to drop by the Rockbridge Farmers Cooperative retail store on May 30 to have your pressure canner checked so you can go into the growing season confident your canning equipment is ready.
