Nellie Leech will celebrate her 98th birthday on Sunday, May 11. Mrs. Leech is a member of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church and a former Collierstown resident. She is currently a resident of Havenwood Assisted Living. Birthday greetings and cards may be mailed to her at 50 Havenwood Drive, Lexington, VA 24450. Best wishes to Mrs. Leech for a happy birthday!

The Collierstown Presbyterian Women recognized five graduating high school seniors during the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, May 4. Those young people graduating from Rockbridge County High School are Josie Caldwell, daughter of Seth and Marnie Caldwell; Eleanor Goodhart, daughter of Seth and Jennifer Goodhart; and Morgan Martin, daughter of John and Shelley Martin. Graduating from Parry McCluer High School is Lucas Goodbar, son of Jessica and Jason Vassar. McKenna Chittum, granddaughter of Raymond and Frances Conner, has completed graduation requirements for Penn Foster High School. Each graduate was recognized individually and presented with a Study Bible. Following the worship service, the congregation enjoyed a reception and a time of fellowship with the graduates and their families in the church’s fellowship hall.

To celebrate Mother’s Day and show appreciation for all mothers, the Collierstown Presbyterian Christian Education Committee will be hosting “Muffins for Moms” on Mother’s Day, May 11, in the fellowship hall from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m. This celebration includes all ladies who are part of the church family and have been a source of encouragement to the church congregation.

The Collierstown Presbyterian C&F Circle will meet on May 20 at 1 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall. Lindsey Davis will lead the May Bible study lesson.

The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department will hold its first barbecue chicken sale of the spring season on Saturday, May 17, beginning at noon. Chicken halves and whole dinners will be available for purchase. A chicken dinner will include a chicken half, choice of two sides, a roll, applesauce and iced tea. Food items may be purchased as carryout but some seating for indoor dining will be available.

Community residents are reminded the Rockbridge Regional Library’s bookmobile welcomes patrons on the grounds of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church each week on Wednesdays from 2:15 to 4 p.m. Community residents are invited to visit the bookmobile to check out books and learn more about the services available to residents and to the community.

Vacation Bible school for the Buffalo and Collierstown communities will be held the week of June 8-12 at the Palmer Community Center. VBS will run from 6:15 to 8 nightly and offer classes for all ages. Families and area residents are invited to come and enjoy Bible study, crafts and recreation. This year vacation Bible school is being sponsored by the seven community churches: Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown and Mt. Horeb United Methodist Churches, Collierstown and Oxford Presbyterian Churches, Rapps Mill Church and the Union View Advent Christian Church.
