April 19, 2025 To the Editor: It appears that the authors and proponents of the Heritage Society’s Project 2025 favor a government in which the executive branch has major power, with the legislative and judicial branches subordinate to it. Such have been the governments of emperors, kings, and tyrants. It was from mad King George III of England that the United States declared its independence in 1776.
The 922-page Project 2025 (available on the internet) can readily be construed as a blueprint for the displacement of a democracy and the installing of a dictatorship; it seems, furthermore, that actions by the current administration have been inspired by it. This has led (so far) to the severe imprisonment abroad of young people who have not been given due legal process, to a clear-cut constitutional crisis between our executive and judicial branches, and even to the threat of criminal contempt of court on our president.
One can’t help but wonder if there hasn’t been some traitorous conspiracy to overthrow our 250-year-old democracy! Donald Trump would be an ideal person for conspirators to choose. He is highly intelligent, with an attractive showman-like demeanor; but he is also an arch-egotist who seems to have no qualms whatsoever about causing personal discomfort and harm to others.
Has there been a traitorous conspiracy to overthrow the democratic government of the United States? If so, who are the conspirators who ought to be accused? A thorough investigation would seem to be called for. R. JOHN BLACKLEY Lexington
