Event At W&L

National Law Day

Event At W&L

Today, Wednesday, April 30, Rockbridge area lawyers and law professionals along with members of the general public will gather to mark National Law Day at an event sponsored by the Washington and Lee University Law School chapter of the American Constitution Society and 50 Ways Rockbridge.

National Law Day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 to encourage the nation to celebrate the rule of law in a free society and reflect on how the U.S. legal system has inspired other countries to treat their citizens more fairly.

This year’s Lex-Rock National Law Day will be held at Hillel House at 5:30 p.m. During the event, lawyers in attendance will be invited to reaffirm the oath they swore upon joining the bar. While the oaths of each state are unique, all include a pledge to uphold the U.S. Constitution, the state constitution, and federal and state law.

Attendees will also hear remarks on the history and importance of the rule of law by Dr. Jill Fraley, W&L law professor and from W&L law student Gabby Roberts, president of the ACS chapter. Ali Fazal, third-year law student, will moderate.

Finally, the general public will be invited to reaffirm their commitment to the foundational ideals of the U.S. Constitution by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

The event is free and open to the public.
