April 18, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: The United States of America is in more political chaos and danger now than at any other time in my 63 years as a registered voter.
A legal U.S. resident with no criminal record has been denied a trial by D. Trump, and sent without recourse to prison in a foreign country; the economy is diving, with the stock market down 16%, destructive Trump tariffs threatening inflation and deep recession; the Army, Navy, NSA, and the FBI have been seriously hobbled; FEMA, Medicare, CDC, and the IRS have been critically weakened; the Voice of America and foreign aid have been abolished; support of NATO has weakened dangerously; all this by presidential decree, against common sense, and without a word from Congress.
On top of this, Trump blames Ukraine for the Russian invasion, then disgracefully attempted a shakedown of Zelensky on TV in the White House. It’s hard to escape the conclusion that either Putin and Trump are in cahoots (read “American Kompromat”), or that Trump is hell bent on the destruction of our republican form of government (read “Project 25”).
How much more evidence do Virginians need? How much more damage can Trump do? Plenty more damage, in my opinion. Now is the time for Congress to impeach and remove Donald Trump, before he does more damage to our economy, our government, and our constitution. And if Congress doesn’t act, we need to vote for representatives who understand the danger.
I ask Mr. Cline, Mr. Warner, and Mr. Kaine if they are listening. FRED and PHYLLIS FEVRIER Rockbridge County
