Tuesday, April 8 -- Spotswood defeated the Rockbridge County High School boys soccer team 2-1 in a Valley District match in Lexington.
Vlad Melichenko and Amaday Mozheyko scored two minutes apart midway through the first half to propel the Trailblazers to a 2-0 advantage. Oscar Kosky pulled a goal back for the Wildcats (1-2, 0-2 district) with a nifty chip shot in the 53rd minute, but RC was unable to find an equalizer down the stretch.
Spotswood outshot the 'Cats 23-3 overall. But RC goalkeeper Eliot McDonald made 10 saves, including a couple of highlight-reel stops, and otherwise the Wildcat defense kept the Trailblazers in check for most of the night.
RC will return to action at East Rockingham on Monday, beginning with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m.
