Firing NNSA Workers Poses Security Risks

March 26, 2025 Editor, The News-Gazette: Massive spending on nuclear weapons without effective management is a thoughtless policy.

The current administration’s attempts to reduce the national debt by reducing the size of the federal workforce will damage our nation’s welfare and security. The decrease in National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) personnel provides a striking example. The departure of competent, experienced scientists, engineers, and other essential personnel will impede the management of the nation’s 5,784 apocalyptic nuclear weapons.

Last year, salaries and benefits comprised only 2.2% of NNSA’s $24.135 billion budget. The small cost benefits from firing NNSA employees pose enormous risks to national and global security. FRANK SETTLE Lexington
