Illumination Workshop, Readings Planned At Grace Episcopal

Religion Illumination Workshop, Readings Planned At Grace Episcopal

The history and use of illumination and other techniques in the creation of The Saint John’s Bible will be highlighted in a workshop on Saturday, April 5, at 10 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church.

The visiting copy of The Saint John’s Bible, Vol. 6, will be available for participants to examine the craft of the scribes who copied the text and the illuminations that accompany the Biblical passages.

Lexington artist David Connolly, who will lead the workshop, has been studying illumination techniques using watercolors and gilt foil. Participants will create their own illuminations, and are encouraged to bring a Scripture verse or a short personal reflection, poem or other writing as the basis for the illumination. Art materials will be supplied, with a small donation requested to defray the cost.

The workshop, in the Brooke Family Room (ground floor, under the church), is suitable for middle school age and up. Contact Connolly, a member of the Nelson Gallery, at [email protected] to indicate interest or for any questions.

The volume, which contains the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, is also available in the church each Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m. through April 10. A visio divina is offered at 1 p.m. each Thursday, focusing each week on a different illumination and reading.

During Holy Week and Easter Week, congregants will be reading the four Gospels and the Acts in continuous afternoon sessions, starting at 3 each day, April 14-16, and resuming on April 22 and 23. Members of local church denominations, students and others who are interested are invited to join in the readings or simply come listen and reflect. To join in the readings, call the church office at (540) 463-4981 or email to [email protected].
