Firefighters from five area departments responded to a fire involving roofing material on Scott Shipp Hall at Virginia Military Institute Friday afternoon. According to Lexington Fire Chief Ty Dickerson, workers on the renovation project at that building were stripping insulation and a membrane from the top of the concrete roof to have it replaced when a fire was noticed later in the day in some of the material that had not yet been removed from the roof. The fire burned about a 12-by-12-foot area. The cause is not exactly known but it is believed to be accidental since construction staff were working on that area earlier, he said. Assisting the Lexington Fire Department were the Buena Vista, South River, Effinger and Kerrs Creek departments and Rockbridge County fire and rescue. (Claudia Schwab photo).
