The Rockbridge Area YMCA held its ninth annual Tee Up for the Y Golf Tournament at the Lexington Golf & Country Club on Friday, Sept. 11. With local sponsors, the tournament, postponed from April 24 due to the coronavirus pandemic, raised money for the YMCA. The tournament drew 22 teams, up from 17 last year.

Each team had four golfers playing in a captain’s choice format, also known as the scramble format, with the best ball chosen after each shot. After having a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the golfers began playing on the hot and sunny afternoon on the challenging 18-hole, par-71 course.

Winning the men’s gross division with a team score of 51 were Brandon Edwards, David “DD” Hinty, Cory Mace and Shawn Watkins. Claiming the women’s gross division with a score of 68 were Sally Bruce, Ellen McCoy, Susan Evans and Helen Wilkinson. Tallying a score of 57 to win the mixed gross division were Mark and Macy Johnson, Mike Wood and Cal Johnson.

Capturing the men’s net division with a score of 49, winning in a tiebreaker, were Andy Collins, Jimmy Clifton, Adam Wright and Mark Coleman. Placing second with the same score were Finley Waddell, Ryan Clark, Troy Hickman and Jason Knick. There were no teams in the women’s net division. Winning the mixed net division with a score of 51 were Harvey Galloway, Lynn McCoy, John Lanier and Shelley Undercoffer.

The men’s closest to the pin winners were Weston Snyder at No. 4, Patrick Blevins at No. 14, and Craig Carlock at No. 17. The women’s closest to the pin winners were Helen Wilkinson at No. 2 and Sally Bruce at No. 8.

Pleased with how the tournament went, YMCA branch executive Bobbie Wagner said, “The Y was thankful to be able to host the tournament this year, especially during such a challenging time for all. It was truly a wonderful day on the course filled with fun, fellowship and celebrating good work our Y is doing.”

“We had a full playing field this year and are grateful for every sponsor, player and supporter who helped make this happen this year,” Wagner added. “This is more than just a golf tournament to us. … The funds raised from the tournament go to support children, families and seniors who need us most in our community.”
