W&L Jazz Ensemble Joins Big Band In Concert

The Washington and Lee University Jazz Ensemble will join forces with the Vosbein Magee Big Band for an evening of hot jazz on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. in the Wilson Concert Hall. The concert is free and no tickets are required.

The student band from Washington and Lee, under the direction of professor Terry Vosbein, will showcase its soloists with a variety of styles and grooves. Classic titles from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis will be served up, along with some hot bebop and some smouldering funk. “Of the Stars and the Sea,” a brand new composition by senior Simon Marland, will receive its world premiere.

After intermission the Vosbein Magee Big Band takes the stage. Co-leader Chris Magee is the hot trumpet soloist, along with Tom Artwick on alto sax and Tom Lundberg on trombone. Co-leader Vosbein is responsible for several of the compositions to be heard, including two new baseball themed works “Line Drive” and “The Old Ball Game.” Greg Moody’s “Bright Eyed Girl” will also receive its world premiere.

A highlight of each fall concert features the seniors from the student band sharing the stage with the pro band. Saxophonists Simon Marland and Daniel Morris will join the Vosbein Magee Big Band for a blues blow-out.
