Friday, Nov. 15 – The Rockbridge County High School football team defeated Brookville 24-14 in the Region 3C quarterfinals on Friday night in Lexington.

With the win, RC’s first playoff victory in seven years, the third-seeded Wildcats (9-2) matched their program record for wins in a season. In the regional semifinals next Friday at 7 p.m., the Wildcats will play at second-seeded Spotswood (11-0). Admission is $8. The Blazers, the Valley District champions, cruised to a 48-8 win over visiting Fluvanna County on Friday night.

After struggling to get their offense going early on, the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in about a minute and a half late in the first quarter. RC quarterback Miller Jay passed to Jailik Lynch, who sprinted away for a 50-yard touchdown. On sixth-seeded Brookville’s next drive, RC’s Bret McClung intercepted quarterback Aiden McDaniel, and Wildcat Gage Shafer made a 69-yard TD run. Daniel Cunningham, who made all three of his extra point attempts, extended the Wildcats’ lead to 14-0 with 3:13 left in the first quarter.

The Bees (5-7) cut the lead to 14-7 by making a series of runs that ended with a 1-yard TD run by Daniel Garrett, followed by a PAT by Ethan Brown with 53-.4 seconds left in the first quarter.

RC extended its lead to 17-7 when Cunningham made a 37-yard field goal with 4:25 left in the first half, but Garrett made another 1-yard TD run, followed by a PAT by Brown that cut the Wildcats’ lead to 17-14 with 38 seconds left in the half.

The third quarter was scoreless until Bret McClung made a 44-yard TD run to extend RC’s lead to 24-14 with 1.8 seconds left. Brookville got into RC territory late in the fourth quarter, but RC’s Isaiah Poindexter intercepted McDaniel, making this Poindexter’s third consecutive game with an interception. Brookville had a chance to score in the final minute, but the RC defense stepped up to prevent it.
