Parry McCluer Boys, May Siblings Garner CC Wins

Parry McCluer High School senior Dylan May won the boys’ race to lead the Fighting Blues’ cross country team to victory at the Eastern Montgomery Invitational, and his younger sister Kensey pulled away win the girls’ race last Wednesday at Camp Alta Mons in Shawsville.

Taking on the mostly flat 3.2-mile course, Dylan May finished in 16:50.18, and Glenvar’s Daniel Zearfoss placed second of 85 runners in 16:56.14. May pulled away after 2 miles before Zearfoss started to catch up, but May held on for the win.

With five runners in the top 15, the PM boys won with 36 points. Floyd County placed second of nine teams with 69 points, and Radford (82) finished third.

PM’s second finisher was Cooper Braddy, placing third in 17:44.41, and teammate Kedryn Chandler came in sixth in 18:05.78. The Blues’ fourth harrier was Trevor Tomlin, cramping up before placing 14th in 19:10.33. PM’s final two runners were Matthew Hemmings (15th, 19:18.28) and Landon Mahaffey (41st, 21:09.41). PM was missing one of its top runners, Brenden Plogger, who was at a funeral.

In the girls’ race, sophomore Kensey May broke away from Glenvar’s Carly Wilkes, one of her top rivals this season, to win in 19:25.56. Wilkes placed second of 55 harriers in 19:44.26. “Kensey probably ran the best of everybody on the team,” PM head coach Chris Poluikis said.

The Blues’ second finisher was Jillian Wheelock, placing 20th in 23:31.07, and teammate Koya Chandler followed closely in 22nd in 23:35.22. PM’s final runner was Sadie Dryden, finishing 40th in 26:59.1.

PM’s girls did not have the minimum number of runners required for a team score, five, because Cloey Mazingo was at a funeral.

Glenvar won the girls’ race with 42 points, edging Radford (44), and Floyd County (59) placed third of six teams.

The Blues will take several runners to race at Craig County today, starting at 4:30 p.m., and will take more runners to the Milestat.com XC Invitational this Saturday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, just outside of Richmond.
