Despite a pandemic and stormy weather, the George C. Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America marked Veterans Day with a very brief wreath-laying ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Courthouse Square last Wednesday. Two wreaths were presented, one on behalf of the MOAA chapter and one from Rockbridge Area Hospice. Presenting the hospice wreath here are Tasha Walsh, RAH executive director, and Susan Bedall, director of counseling.

Retired Navy Capt. George Jurand, president of the MOAA chapter, accompanied by retired Navy Commander Rich Hastings, gives brief remarks. “In these days of uncertainty, pandemics, divisiveness, we need something that binds us together, a rallying point that we can all gather around,” he said, “and that is our shared respect and gratitude for those who have served and continue to serve our wonderful country.”

Tasha Walsh, Rockbridge Area Hospice executive director, tells the small crowd assembled that one of the plaques at the Veterans Memorial mentions “serving the highest ideals of honor” and that in RAH’s “We Honor Veterans” program, hospice aims to make sure that veterans experience that through the end of this life.
