United Way Launches Book Drive

Area residents are being asked to help provide new and gently used children’s books in the community this fall.

From Monday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 4, United Way of Rockbridge will be holding a children’s book drive with local businesses and organizations collecting the books.

Countywide drop-off points will be identified with a colorful poster and collection box and are listed below. Books collected will be distributed to local safety-net agencies to promote childhood literacy and allow children to have their own books at home. Last year, over 1,000 books were collected and then distributed to children throughout the county.

“Now is the time to clear off your bookshelves and circulate those books to other children or to buy new books at our area merchants to donate,” said UWR board President, Janet Lemmer. “Your participation will help to create a community where everyone can thrive.”

Books can be dropped off at the following participating businesses:

• Books & Co. …toys, too! - 29 W. Nelson St., Lexington.

• Cattlemen’s Market - 139 E. Midland Trail, Lexington.

• CornerStone Bank - 2275 Beech Ave., Buena Vista.
