Turner Ashby Topic Of Civil War Talk

The chief executive officer of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Association will examine Confederate Gen. Turner Ashby in a talk next week at Virginia Military Institute.

Keven M. Walker will present “The Saga of Turner Ashby, the ‘Black Knight’ of the Valley” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Nichols Auditorium.

At the start of the Civil War, Ashby formed a group called the “Mountain Rangers,” served under Stonewall Jackson, and ultimately took command of the 7th Virginia Cavalry until his death near Harrisonburg in June 1862.

Since joining the SVBF as its CEO, Walker has led the way in preserving over 1,000 acres of battlefield land in the Shenandoah Valley; opened a new visitor center and a 600-acre battlefield park; and more than tripled the Foundation’s youth involvement.

His talk is being sponsored by the Rockbridge Civil War Round Table and VMI’s Museum System.
