Tourney A Fundraiser For RC Golf

Local golfers competed in the 2020 Men’s Member-Member Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Lexington Golf & Country Club.

Teaming up in 24 pairs, the 48 golfers raised money for the Rockbridge County High School golf team. Several members of the RCHS golf team volunteered on hole No. 17, where golfers competed for closest to the pin. In Saturday’s action, James Owens was closest to the pin.

The tournament consisted of four flights, and the top team in each flight went to the four-team playoff on Sunday afternoon.

Lee Rakes and Sean Harrington, who shot a two-day score of 139 on the challenging 18-hole, par-71 course, won the shootout. Rakes and Harrington reached the shootout by winning a scorecard playoff over Rick Drake and Bruce King, who had also shot a 139 over two days.

Firing the best two-day score, with a 133, were Kurt Swenson and Andrew Deal. The other finalists were the team of Bill Teten and Rick Leech, shooting a 139, and the pair of Rick “Rocky” Trudgeon and James Owens (141).

Flight runner-ups were J.P. Mason and Stuart Brewbaker (137), Rick and Mike Alford (144) and Carrol Comstock and Kermit Rockett (141).

Reviewing the weekend, the country club’s PGA professional, Jeff Wagner, said, “The tournament went well. Weather was sunny and a bit hot, and the members had a great time.”
