Support Local Farmers At Market 12

Aug. 12, 2019 Editor, The News-Gazette:

It is hard to believe that we live in a food desert. But we do.

The food we eat every day doesn’t come from around here. Our food comes from a long way away. In Lexington and Buena Vista, we have some nice grocery stores. Food Lion and Kroger have an abundance of all kinds of food on the shelves. And we take that food for granted. But a lot of that food in those stores comes from over 1,000 miles away!

Can you imagine what it takes to get food to us from over 1,000 miles away? And the average grocery store in America has only a three-day supply of food.

Where does that leave us in an emergency? We need to start seriously supporting our local food producers in Rockbridge County to ensure our local food supply! We can start by spending just a fraction of our weekly food-dollar at our local farmer’s market every Wednesday in the McCrum’s parking lot. Supporting our local farmers helps us secure our local food supply.

Come on; let’s start thinking outside the box!
