Spring Sports Seasons Cancelled

Rockbridge area spring high school and college sports, along with local races, have been canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Virginia High School League’s Crisis Management Committee was scheduled to meet Tuesday to re-evaluate spring sports, originally delayed two weeks from March 16. However, on Monday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam ordered all K-12 schools in the state to remain closed for the rest of the school year.

The Southern Conference, which includes Virginia Military Institute, announced on Tuesday of last week that it is canceling the remainder of the spring sports season. Last Friday, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, which includes Washington and Lee University, announced that it was canceling all spring sports. Southern Virginia University concluded its spring sports season, effective Monday of last week.

Four local races have either been postponed or canceled. The fourth annual Leprechaun Leap 5K run/walk has been postponed from this Saturday to Sept. 26. The sprint triathlon that was scheduled to take place this Saturday at Rockbridge Aquatics Center, Brewbaker Field and fLEX Fitness Studio has been postponed to a date to be determined. The pool closed last Wednesday and will remain closed until at least April 1.

The third annual Run of the Mill 5K, scheduled to take place on April 18 in Brownsburg and Raphine, benefiting the Brownsburg Community Association, has been rescheduled for May 23.

The 45th annual Lexington Road and River Relay, scheduled for May 2, has been canceled, with plans to return next May.
