Salatin To Speak In Water Quality Series

The public is invited to the final presentation in a three-part series about water quality in Rockbridge County. It will be held in Dunlap Auditorium, Lexington Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m.

This month’s presentation will feature Joel Salatin, who will talk and answer questions about his practical solutions for conserving and maintaining clean water.

Salatin, who likes to call himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer, is the editor of The Stock-man Grass Farmer, and writes the Pitchfork Pulpit column for Mother Earth News, as well as numerous guest articles for ACRES USA and other publications. He has been the featured speaker and guest for numerous events and programs around the world aimed at providing can-do methods for sustainable farming practices.

Polyface Farm has been featured in the bestseller “Omnivore’s Dilemma” and award-winning documentary “Food Inc,” and services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmer’s market with beef, pork, poultry and forestry products.

Light snacks and water provided. Audience participation in Q&A encouraged.

During the first two presentations, participants of this series learned two principal takeaways. Of the 20 percent of rivers and streams monitored in Rockbridge County by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in the past several decades, nearly 60 percent are designated as impaired. Also, 215 owners of the 15,000 private wells in Rockbridge county have sent in samples for testing by the Virginia Household Water Quality Program since 2008, and of those, about 50 percent contained total coliform bacteria, 19 percent of which also contained E. coli bacteria.

These presentations are sponsored by Rockbridge Water Monitors, a group of concerned citizens allied with RACC and the Environment Committee/50 Ways Rock-bridge. Anyone interested in finding out more about RWM or with questions about this series, contact Gretchen Sukow at .
