Saturday, Feb. 20 – The Parry McCluer High School wrestling team placed 10th at the Class 1 state tournament for the second year in a row on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center, led by senior Forrest Vassar’s second-place finish.

In the finals of the 285-pound/heavyweight division, Vassar faced defending champion Brender Rojas and lost in a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker. The wrestlers scored on escapes, and Rojas got the final point on an escape when the match went to sudden death. In last year’s state finals, Rojas had beaten Vassar by the same score.

Other Fighting Blues earning medals by placing in the top six were freshmen Cody Thomas (fourth, 195-pounds) Aaron Pruett (fifth, 132) and junior Dylan Critzer (fifth, 152). Also competing for the Blues were freshmen Lee Chittum (126) and junior Kaden Forren (182).

The Blues scored 43 points to crack the top 10. Grundy won its fourth consecutive state title with 249 points, Riverheads (200) placed second, and Rural Retreat (185) finished third.
