Rose Marie Engleman Howard, 99, passed away peacefully on Nov. 18, 2021, at Catawba Valley Medical Center after a long happy life and brief illness.

Rose was born in Lexington on Feb. 15, 1922, to the late Rector and Roberta Engleman. She graduated from Madison College, magna cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in education. She then taught at Beaver Dam School in New Hanover County, where she met the love of her life and future husband of 55 years, the late Waller Lane Howard III. They were married in 1946 and moved to Roanoke, where they both taught at Lee Junior High School.

In 1953 they were blessed by a daughter, Joy Roberta Howard Krueger of Roanoke, and soon after in 1954 a son, Waller Kim Howard.

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Joy and siblings Alice Gilliam, Dorothy Campbell, and Buzzy Engleman.

She is survived by her son and his wife Jane of Hickory, N.C.; sister, Louise Ratliff of Salem; son-in-law, Bobby Krueger of Roanoke; grandchildren, Beth Krueger Howell (husband Dave), Brian Krueger, Adam Howard (wife Brooke), and Mandy Howard Young (husband Brad); and great-grandchildren Mackenzie Howell, Bayleigh Krueger, Austin and Cash Howard, Jane and Delia Young; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Rose was an active member of Northminster Church for more than 75 years. After being blessed with children, she became a stay-at-home mom, and caring for her family was her greatest joy.

Rose always ensured everyone was fed with her wonderful cooking, was an excellent listener and loved long phone calls with family and friends far away. She appreciated beauty through her love of flowers as an active member of her garden club and loved making and giving away her beautiful handmade dolls, and crafts. Rose and Waller were world travelers and loved camping, cruises, and yearly family beach trips.

There will be a celebration of life service near her 100th birthday in February for friends and family in Roanoke.

Rose will be interred at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, with her beloved husband.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory, N.C., is serving the Howard family.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3911 Greenland Avenue NW, Roanoke, VA 24012, or a charity of your choice. N-G
