Rockbridge Fire/EMS Proposal Presented

The latest proposal for a single organization to represent local firefighters and first aid crews was presented Monday to the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors.

The name of the proposed new organization would be the Rockbridge Volunteer Emergency Officers Association. The entity would be a merger of members of the Rockbridge County Firefighters Association and Rockbridge Emergency Rescue Group.

The proposal calls for having two treasurers – one from the RCFA and one from RERG – who would oversee separate funds. There would be a provision for the fire and EMS transport agencies to revert to their present organizations if in the future they feel their interests aren’t being served.

The purpose of creating the single entity is to have one voice for recommendations on policies and funding for the supervisors. Currently there are three separate emergency services organizations – the RCFA, the RERG and the Rockbridge Regional Fire and Rescue Commission – who make recommendations to the supervisors.

The supervisors initiated the process of creating a single organization earlier this year. Representatives of the RCFA and RERG have been meeting this summer to iron out details of a merger. If the proposal moves forward, the supervisors will have to give notice to Lexington and Buena Vista of the county’s intention to pull out of the regional commission and take steps to amend county code to reflect the changes.
