Returning for its seventh year, the annual Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout was again a successful fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at Rockbridge County High School.

With 11 basketball games – three on Friday and eight on Saturday – the event, which is presented by Alcova Mortage, welcomed lots of fans to watch plenty of high-quality basketball. Numbers were still being added up for this year, but Rock the Ribbon had raised $63,000 for the ACS before last weekend, with the funds going toward cancer research and prevention.

Event founder and director Deputy Travis Patterson of the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office said he was grateful for all the support. “We would like to thank all of our supporters, sponsors, the schools that came and participated, and the large crew of volunteers that make our event possible,” he said.

There were some delays on Saturday and competitive games that made the last game go until almost midnight, “but it went smoothly other than that,” Patterson said. He said that Friday’s attendance was down from last year, but there was a good turnout on Saturday, including coaches from the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team who were scouting players.

In one of the most exciting games of the weekend on Saturday night, Northside, last year’s Class 3 state champion, defeated East Rockingham, last year’s Class 2 runner-up, 79-76 in overtime.
