RCPS Praised For Hunger Efforts

Jan. 22, 2021

Editor, The News-Gazette:

Countless unsung heroes are working to keep our communities safe and healthy during the pandemic. One such group is the nutrition team at Rockbridge County Public Schools who are going above and beyond to connect students with meals.

Across our communities, families face unprecedented levels of food insecurity from lost jobs and wages stemming from the pandemic. No Kid Hungry Virginia estimates one in five children in the commonwealth could face hunger this year, up from one in eight prior to the pandemic.

During these difficult times, Rockbridge County Public Schools is stepping up. School nutrition teams are currently delivering meals to students three days a week with two sets of breakfasts and lunches provided on Mondays and Wednesdays to cover the full week. They’ve also established innovative partnerships with community organizations like the Rockbridge Area Relief Association and Campus Kitchen to help families access high quality food. The team recently received a $50,000 grant from No Kid Hungry Virginia to help them reach more families.

We’re thankful for the ongoing dedication and commitment of staff at Rockbridge County Public Schools as they work to ensure no child goes hungry during the pandemic.
