RC Wrestlers Win Shumaker Classic For Fourth Straight Year

Saturday, Dec. 7 – The Rockbridge County High School wrestling team opened the season by winning the Shumaker Classic for the fourth consecutive year, while Parry McCluer had two wrestlers medal by placing in the top four on Friday and Saturday at PM.

The Wildcats took first place in the round-robin tournament, in its 10th year, with 43 points. James River placed second of 12 teams with 33 points, and Northside (27) finished third. The Fighting Blues, who had most of their wrestlers competing for the first time, finished 11th with seven points.

RC had 10 medalists. The five Wildcats winning championships were Zeke Mohr (120-pounds), Owen Hall (152), Seth Youngblood (170), John Ryan Sedovy (170) and Anthony Marando (195). Other RC medalists were Justin Clark (second, 106), Dacomha Dandridge (second, 120), Igor Lakicevic (second, 285/heavyweight), David Allio (third, 285/heavyweight) and Nic Marando (fourth, 145).

Blues earning medals were Nick Craft (third, 138) and Forrest Vassar (fourth, 285/heavyweight).

The tournament is named for Bruce Shumaker, a former Natural Bridge High School wrestling coach.

The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to James River and Fort Defiance in a dual tournament, starting at 6 p.m. The Blues will travel to Fishersville for the Wilson Memorial Hornet Duals next Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
