RC Nets Comeback Win

Showing resilience, the Rockbridge County High School volleyball team bounced back after dropping the first set and earned a 3-1 road win over Salem on Thursday to improve to 3-0.

The Wildcats struggled early on in the non-district match, but they came back to capture a 23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 win in their first away match and their only match of the week.

RC head coach Amanda McCoy said the Wildcats had “a little slower start than I would prefer. We were a little sluggish, and our passing was not as clean as we would have liked.”

She praised her team for nearly coming back in the first set after trailing by eight points, but they fell short. “It’s just hard to start off so early in a set with a large deficit and come out of it,” McCoy said. “Salem is a scrappy team, and they found some seams we weren’t covering well.

McCoy said several players stepped up to block, including Rachel Hines, who had just stepped into her role as an outside hitter. “I was happy with the progress she is showing in practice and in matches,” McCoy said.

Graceon Armstrong led the Wildcats with 19 kills and six blocks, Jaydyn Clemmer added 14 kills, and Krissy Whitesell dished out 51 assists.

Meredith Hicks paced Salem (3-1) with eight kills, Haley Steffan had 10 assists, and Brooke Baxley collected 26 digs.

“Everyone played in the match so it was truly a team effort,” said McCoy. “I’m proud of the girls for rebounding and winning our first away match of the season.”

RC was scheduled to play at Parry Mc-Cluer yesterday. For the result of that match, visit www.thenews-gazette.com, and see next week’s newspaper for the full story and photos.

The Wildcats will continue nondistrict action with a match at Fort Defiance on Thursday, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m. In the season opener on Aug. 27 in Lexington, RC defeated Fort 3-0.

On Friday and Saturday, the Wildcats will play in the Endless Summer Classic at Virginia Beach, a tournament that was canceled last year due to Hurricane Florence.

The Wildcats will then start Valley District action at home against Waynesboro on Thursday, Sept. 19, beginning with the junior varsity match at 5:30 p.m.
