Monday, Oct. 7 – The Rockbridge County High School golf team concluded another successful season by placing fourth of seven teams at the Region 3C tournament at The Club at Ironwood on Monday in Staunton.

The Wildcats, the two-time defending regional champions, shot a 323 to finish behind winner Western Albemarle (311), runner-up and host Wilson Memorial (314) and Rustburg (320). Completing the standings were Turner Ashby (348), Fluvanna County (349) and Liberty Christian Academy (363).

Western Albemarle and Wilson Memorial were the two teams that advanced to next week's Class 3 state tournament, and the top three individuals outside of those teams also advanced.

Rustburg’s Nick Rakes was the medalist, firing a 68 on the challenging 18-hole, par-71 course. Tying for second were WM’s Patrick Smith and FC’s Killian Donnelly, both shooting 70.

Leading the Wildcats, who had defeated TA three weeks earlier to win their third consecutive Valley District title in Lexington, was senior Cole Cathcart, placing ninth of 55 golfers with a 76. Junior teammate Garrett Huffman, the Valley District champion, shot a 77 to finish 12th. RC’s third scorer was senior Will McClung, coming in 14th with a 79, and freshman Paul Russell completed team scoring by carding a 91 for 32nd place. Also competing for the Wildcats were juniors Aaron Plogger (36th place, 93) and John Shomo (48th, 104).

The Wildcats’ three girls – sophomore Kendall Nye and freshmen Abby Brooks and Sofia Vargas – will prepare for the girls’ zone qualifier, which will take place at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
