Wildcats Send Five Individuals, Four Relays To State Meet

The Rockbridge County High School girls swimming team placed fourth of 12 scoring teams at the Region 3C Meet, while the RC boys finished eighth of 13 scoring teams on Tuesday of last week at the Brooks Family YMCA in Charlottesville.

In the girls’ meet, the Wildcats tallied 82 points, finishing behind host Western Albemarle (146), Monticello (116) and Fluvanna County (95). Completing the top five was RC’s Valley District rival Spotswood (58).

The RC boys scored 28 points. Brookville won the boys’ meet with 140 points, with Western Albemarle (134) placing second and Fluvanna County (115) finishing third. Rounding out the top five were Spotswood (80) and Monticello (37).

Five Wildcats qualified individually – four girls and one boy – for the Class 3 state meet by time or by placing in the top five, and four relay teams advanced by finishing in the top four.

“We had a fantastic regional meet,” said Morgan Richter, who is RC’s co-head coach, along with Leslie Ayers. “The boys and girls were dropping time left and right, and it was great to see the swimmers reap the benefits of a difficult season.”

For the RC girls, freshman Ali Pfaff won both the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle, and she’d previously qualified individually in five other races. She finished the shorter race in 52.53 seconds and completed the longer one in 1:55.29, both personal records (PRs).

Other Lady Wildcats advancing were Isabel Pfaff, Susanne Mayock-Bradley and Liliana Vargas. All three girls’ relay teams had already qualified by time for the state meet.

Isabel Pfaff placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.72 seconds, while Vargas finished fifth in 26.02. The older Pfaff sister also advanced in the 100-yard butterfly, coming in fifth in 1:02.13. Mayock-Bradley advanced in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing third in a PR 1:12.66.

The RC girls placed third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:53.28. Team members were Ali and Isabel Pfaff, Mayock-Bradley and Vargas. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Lady Wildcats finished fourth in 1:43.53 with team members Vargas, Aine MacDermott and the Pfaff sisters. The RC girls also finished fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:07.3 with team members MacDermott, Sofia Vargas, Ella Vaught and Liesel Nelson.

Aiden Mason-Velasquez will represent the RC boys in two events at the state meet. The junior swimmer placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.79 and finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.03 seconds, both PRs.

The RC boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay team, which had qualified by time, will also compete at the state meet. At the regional meet, the team placed fifth in 1:36.81. Team members were Mason-Velasquez, Benjamin Barney, Charlie Smith and Paul Grajzl.

The Class 3 state meet will take place on Friday and Saturday at the SwimRVA Collegiate School Aquatics Center in Richmond.

Looking forward to the meet, Richter said, “We are happy that a large group qualified for states, and we have no doubt that they will swim faster in Richmond.”
