Tuesday, Dec. 10 – Struggling to make shots, the Rockbridge County High School boys basketball team suffered a 54-28 loss to Western Albemarle in the home opener on Tuesday night in Lexington.

The Warriors (4-0), who had defeated RC 56-34 in the season opener last Tuesday in Crozet, used their height advantage and athleticism to grab rebounds, defend and make shots. WA made seven 3-pointers in the game, while the Wildcats (1-2) hit five triples.

WA raced to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter and led 26-9 at halftime. RC picked up its offense in the second half, doubling its halftime score to trail 40-18 after the third quarter, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Warrior Thomas Mangrum led all scorers with 18 points, sinking two 3-poitners, Andrew Shifflett added 11 points, and Riley Prichard chipped in seven points.

One of the bright spots for the Wildcats was Jailik Lynch, who scored five points and took three charges. Aaron Plogger led RC with six points on two 3-pointers, Devin Lewis and Bret McClung each scored five points, Isaiah Poindexter chipped in four points and made a steal, and Austin Higgins made a 3-pointer.

The Wildcats will continue nondistrict action next Tuesday at Alleghany, starting with junior varsity action at 5:30 p.m.
