Monday, Oct. 28 --  Rockbridge County High School freshman golfer Sofia Vargas completed an impressive run in the postseason on Monday at the Virginia High School League girls open golf tournament at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

Vargas finished 68th, shooting a 120 on the challenging 18-hole par-70 course. This was Vargas’s first-ever 18-hole match. There were 69 golfers competing from all six divisions, and Independence’s Julie Shin won with a 64.

Vargas, who had not played golf until the first day of practice in August, had advanced to the state tournament by placing second of 16 individuals at the rain-shortened state qualifier last Tuesday at Heritage Oaks.

RC head coach David Miller said he was “so proud of all she accomplished this season. From where she started to what she did the last few weeks is a tribute to her attitude, toughness, athletic abilities and willingness to listen and learn. She has a bright future, as do a few of our other younger players.”

Reflecting on the journey, Vargas said, “I never thought I could make it this far since I just started golfing two months ago.  I am really motivated to put the time to get better and return to states to next year.”

On playing the full 18 holes for the first time, Vargas said, “I was surprised how exhausting it was mentally as well as physically.”

Giving credit to Miller for his great coaching, Vargas said, “Every day I looked forward to golf because of Coach Miller.  No matter how I was doing, he continued to encourage me."
