Tuesday, Oct. 22 – Rockbridge County High School freshman golfer Sofia Vargas advanced to the girls state tournament by placing second of 16 inidviduals at the state qualifier on Tuesday at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

Vargas, who began playing golf this summer, shot a 46 over the nine-hole, par-36 course, as the match was shortened from 18 holes due to rain and wind. She only trailed the medalist, Wilson Memorial’s Madison Flint, by four strokes. Two golfers tied for third place by shooting 47 and went to a playoff for the third and final state-qualifying spot, won by East Rockingham’s Abbi Green.

RC sophomore Kendall Nye placed 12th, firing a 63, and freshman teammate Abby Brooks finished 13th with a 64.

Vargas will return to Heritage Oaks for the girls state tournament on Sunday and Monday.
