On the first day of the early signing period, Nov. 12, two Rockbridge County High School seniors signed national letters of intent to play sports at the collegiate level.

Garrett Huffman signed to play Division II baseball at King University in Bristol, Tenn. Molly Hellwig signed to play Division III soccer at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga.

Under the direction of former RC head coach Justin Wenger, Huffman has been a strong hitter, base runner and third baseman. As a freshman, Huffman helped the Wildcats earn a 12-8 record and a trip to the Region 3C tournament, where they ended their season in the quarterfinals. During Huffman’s sophomore season, the Wildcats went 9-12. His junior season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Huffman is preparing for his senior season next spring, under the director of new head coach Travis Roadcap.

Huffman has also been a leader for the RC golf team, earning all-district honors his sophomore and junior years and helping the Wildcats win the Valley District title for the last three years. The Wildcats placed second at the Group 3A state tournament when Huffman was a freshman, and they placed fifth his sophomore year, when he tied for 10th place. They won the Region 3C tournament both years.

Coached by Ray Ellington her freshman year before Sean Harrington became the head girls soccer coach her sophomore year, Hellwig has been a high-scoring forward for the Wildcats. As a freshman, she was selected to the all-district first team after helping the Wildcats make their first ever regional tournament appearance, going 9-7-1 to tie their program record for wins in a season, ending the season in the Region 3C quarterfinals.

The Wildcats went 4-14-1 during Hellwig’s sophomore season, and she was named to the all-district first team and earned allregion honorable mention honors. Hellwig’s junior season was canceled due to the pandemic. She is preparing for her senior season next spring.
