Covington (2-4) at Parry

McCluer (1-5)

WHEN: 7 p.m. on Friday

WHERE: Bobby Williams Field in Buena Vista

LAST YEAR: The Cougars defeated the Blues 19-7 in Covington. The Covington defense came to play and forced the Blues to turn the ball over six times, including five interceptions. They also limited Marcellius Dawson to 89 rushing yards, and he scored a TD on an 80-yard pass from Zach Claytor. The Blues weren’t able to get anything going on offense, and the defense struggled to contain running back Shaun Smith Jr., who ran for 181 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

THE SCOOP: The Blues picked up their first victory of the season last time out, 40-0 at Craig County. The Cougars dropped a 42-14 decision to an undefeated Narrows team that looks like the team to beat in the Pioneer District. Covington’s record doesn’t jump off the page, but don’t be fooled. They are a very talented team and return a lot of dangerous players, including Smith, quarterback Simon Gibson, and receiver Skyler Barnett. The Blues ran the ball with ease, accumulating 393 rushing yards against Craig. They’ll need another spectacular performance from the line to enjoy that same success against a much better defense.

THE NEWS-GAZETTE’S PICK: The Blues’ confidence is surely as high as it’s been all season, and that will likely show early in this contest.PM will hang with Covington for the first half of this game by keying in on Smith and putting Gibson under pressure. However, Gibson, who is listed 6 feet 4 inches, is a very capable passer and he’ll find a way to use some of his weapons as the game wears on and the Blues’ defense tires a bit. PM will get another solid performance from fullback Keaton Coleman, but the Cougars will take this one, 35-21.
