PM Girls Advance To Semis

Third-seeded Parry Mc-Cluer High School defeated sixth-seeded Craig County 44-34 in the quarterfinals of the Pioneer District girls basketball tournament in Buena Vista on Monday.

Grayce Henson scored 14 points and Anna Claytor notched 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Fighting Blues (9-11), who clinched a spot in next week’s Region 1C tournament. PM will face No. 2 seed Covington on the road in the Pioneer District semifinals tonight at 6.

Maddy Oliver led the Rockets with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Autumn Hutchison chipped in 10 points and eight boards for Craig (5-12).

The game was tightly contested until deep into the fourth quarter. The Rockets led 25-24 in the closing seconds of the third period, but Maddie Henson nailed a short jumper at the buzzer to give the Blues a 26-25 advantage.

PM then scored the first six points of the final frame, going ahead 32-25 on Maddie Henson’s layup at the 4:46 mark. And once the Blues took control of the game in the fourth period, they never relinquished that command.

“In the fourth quarter, the kids made good decisions,” PM head coach Adam Gilbert said. “We hit shots. We got to the foul line and made those, and we were able to get some stops on the defensive end.”

Grayce Henson was integral to the Blues’ fourth-quarter success, battling through foul trouble to score seven points in the stanza – including two key low-post buckets that helped PM put the game away.

“Grayce’s had a good year,” Gilbert said. “She’s coming into her own a little bit. … She’s turning into a nice player for us.”
