Wednesday, April 7 – Both the Parry McCluer High School boys and girls cross country teams won the Pioneer District meet on Wednesday afternoon at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista.

Running under the sun with temperatures in the low 80s, the PM boys had a perfect score of 15 points to beat Eastern Montgomery’s 49. The PM girls scored 20 points to defeat runner-up Eastern Montgomery (45) and third-place Highland County (55).

PM senior Trevor Tomlin won the boys’ race, completing the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 19 seconds. The course is mostly flat but has one challenging hill that runners have to go up twice. Teammate Kedryn Chandler placed second of 19 harriers in 17:37, and he was followed by Blues Brenden Plogger (third, 18:11) and Kovyk Chandler (fourth, 18:16).

Jamie Wall of Narrows placed fifth in 19:03, but Narrows did not have a full team, so PMs Durham Baker (sixth, 19:58) counted as the fifth-place runner in the team score. Also racing for the Blues were David Lawhorne (ninth, 21:05) and Colin Donnelly (11th, 23:46).

PM junior Jillian Wheelock won the girls’ race in 22:54, beating teammate Koya Chandler, who placed second of 17 runners in 23:12). Eastern Montgomery’s Sarah Weatherspoon finished third in 23:36.

Also cracking the top five for PM were Cloey Mazingo (fourth, 24:42) and Madie Henson (fifth, 26:34). PM’s fifth runners was Katie Claytor (eighth, 29:46).

The Blues will race in the Region 1C meet next Wednesday at Blacksburg High School, with the girls’ race at 4:30 p.m. and the boys’ race at 5:15 p.m.
