Monday, Jan. 11 – The Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team came up short 78-64 against sharpshooting Lord Botetourt on Monday night in Buena Vista.

The Fighting Blues (1-1) played the Cavaliers (3-0) competitively early on, leading 16-13 after the first quarter and trailing 34-31 at halftime, but LB lit it up from three-point range to pull away in the second half.

The Cavaliers sank 14 3-pointers, shooting 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from beyond the arc. PM shot 35 percent (7-of-20) from three-point range. Leading LB was Conner Tilley, who scored 21 points and made five 3-pointers. Tanner Selkirk added 12 points, sinking three treys, and Kyle Arnholt chipped in 12 points.

Spencer Hamilton led the Blues with 29 points, sinking three 3-pointers, and had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Will Dunlap scored 11 points and had six assists and four steals steals, while Ethan Moore scored 10 points and Talen Roberts had six assists and four rebounds. PM and LB each grabbed 26 rebounds.

The experience was valuable for the Blues, a Class 1 school that made the state quarterfinals last year and was facing a larger Class 3 school in LB.

The Blues will begin Pioneer District action at home on Thursday when they take on Narrows, starting with the junior varsity game at 5:30 p.m. Before the game, the Blues will honor their six seniors.
