Tuesday, Dec. 3 -- The Parry McCluer High School boys basketball team defeated James River 49-40 in the season opener for both teams in Buena Vista.

Will Dunlap recorded 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists to lead the Fighting Blues to the victory, while Spencer Hamilton notched 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks for PM. Patrick Clevenger led the Knights with 15 points, and Ryan Steger contributed 10 markers.

The Blues never trailed in the contest, using a 10-0 first-quarter run to build up a 14-4 lead that they would never relinquish. JR pulled within five (37-32) on Clevenger's three-point play with 4:47 remaining in the fourth period, but the Blues hit 12-of-13 free throws in the final frame to salt away the win.

Talen Roberts chipped in six points for PM, while Ryan Perry and Ethan Moore notched five points apiece. Isiah Moran finished with seven points for the Knights. PM outrebounded JR 33-14, although the Knights won the turnover battle 17-4.

The Blues' next two games will both come against Timberlake Christian. The teams face off in Forest on Friday, with the return match set for Buena Vista on Monday. Junior varsity action starts at 5:30 p.m. on both evenings.
