Penelope Pratt “Penny” Newhall, age 76, passed away on Sept. 7, 2022, at her home in Walkers Creek.

She was at her finest singing harmony with her loving husband of more than 45 years, Dan Newhall. The two of them could be heard backing up fine lead singers throughout our area and even so far away as the Florida Keys.

This bright, loving, exceptional mother and superb musician will be forever remembered and missed by the ones who were closest to her and can remember the days when she overflowed with excitement and enthusiasm for a unique find at a yard sale, or the first few wildflowers as they would come up in the woods in the spring. She loved to walk on the beach and look for unique shells; she also enjoyed sunset cruises in the dinghy in Florida.

Penny was born in Winston Salem, N.C., on Feb. 7, 1946. She completed bachelor’s degrees in music and mathematics, and also completed Nursing School before meeting Dan in Pennsylvania and moving to Rockbridge County in 1975. She then spent her years as a full-time mother until Dan retired and they were able to spend their winters in Marathon, Fla., playing music and enjoying the wonderful Caribbean environment.

She is survived by her husband, Dan Newhall; two sons, Jonathan and Tom Newhall; and four grandchildren Julia, Jade, Jensen and Fisher Newhall.

There will be a private burial for immediate family at her home and a Celebration of Life is in the planning stage and the date will be announced once it is decided.
