March 11, 1970

Frank McCarthy, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and producer of the film “Patton,” arranged for a private screening of the Academy Award winning movie at the State Theater for the corps of cadets and VMI faculty.

The Lexington School Board agreed to ask the State Department of Education to conduct a feasibility study of a consolidation of the schools of Lexington, Rockbridge County and the City of Buena Vista.

A new Girl Scout troop was formed in Lexington. Nine girls from all three school divisions were the inaugural members of Junior Troop 624. Troop leaders were Mrs. William Badgett of Lexington and Mrs. William Coffey of Buena Vista.

March 15, 1995

More than $4 million worth of cocaine was seized from a vehicle stopped on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County. Virginia State Police arrested two California residents and charged each with possession with intent to distribute. The van they were driving contained 413.6 pounds of cocaine.

911 service became available to everyone in the Rockbridge area with 463, 464 and 462 exchanges. Nina Cron, the county’s 911 coordinator, said that callers would need to explain the nature of the problem to the dispatchers and not just hang up.
