No SVU Sports Before January

In conjunction with an announcement by the Capital Athletic Conference on Friday, Southern Virginia University stated that it was suspending winter sports competitions through the end of the 2020 calendar year due to the continued impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to the previously announced fall and dual-season teams, the following CAC sports will not compete during the fall 2020 semester: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s swimming, and wrestling.

The decision was recommended by league athletic administrators and approved by the CAC Board of Directors with consideration for the health and safety of each campus community. A decision on winter championships and the remainder of the conference basketball schedule will be made at a later date.

As of last week, SVU had no COVID-19 cases. The school did have two confirmed cases last month, but those students have recovered and are healthy again, a spokesperson said.

“We are extremely grateful for the cooperation and support from our student-athletes as we have tried to balance safety and athletic experience,” said SVU athletic director Deidra Dryden in a statement on Friday. “We are so appreciative of their positive attitudes and sacrifice to help keep our campus community healthy and safe. We will continue to prepare for future competitions and remember this is for now, not forever.”

A press release from the CAC on Friday stated, “The conference continues to support individual institutions if they are able to safely schedule competition within their own regional areas, while relying on local and state guidance.”

In mid-July, the CAC, which includes SVU fall sports other than football, announced it was postponing the fall seasons for soccer, women’s volleyball, field hockey and cross country. In football, the Knights compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, which announced in July it was postponing fall sports until the spring. The ODAC also announced in July that its winter teams would not compete before January.

The SVU athletic department will continue to work with the University COVID Resource Center, CAC, conference affiliates, and the NCAA to consider future competitive opportunities.
