Mazingo, Taylor Win Labor Day 5K

With runners making their way around Camden Field and through downtown streets, the annual Buena Vista Labor Day 5K and kids’ fun runs raised about $1,000 for the Parry McCluer High School cross country teams on Monday of last week.

Taking on morning humidity and temperatures in the 70s, there were 34 runners in the flat 5K, 12 runners in the 1-mile fun run around Camden Field for children age 12 and under, and five runners in the 250-meter lap around Camden Field for children age 5 and under.

Mindy May, the mother of the lead male and female runners for the PM cross country teams, organized the race, with the help of PM head cross country coach Chris Poluikis, PM’s runners, and several parent volunteers. The Blues’ cross country runners could be seen pointing directions and cheering on race participants, who also heard cheers from Labor Day parade participants. Watermelons were given to overall and age group winners.

The overall winner of the 5K was Jason Mazingo, 37, who finished in 20 minutes, 19.47 seconds. Fellow cross country father Samuel Hirt, 37, followed Mazingo closely in second place in 20:26.72. Les Gearhart, 55, came in third in 20:58.33.

Each runner in the 5K received a t-shirt, and water bottles were given as prizes for both kids’ races.

Reflecting on the race, Mindy May said, “Parry Mc-Cluer High School cross country is a unified family. Student-athletes and their families were involved in making this fun run fund-raiser a success.  There was great music, cool t-shirts, an awesome bake sale, enthusiastic cheerleaders and fantastic prizes.  The continuous community support by race participants and sponsors is valued and appreciated.  This race is an established tradition that will bring more of the same next year.”
