Local Grads Throwing Well

Two local athletes who won state throwing championships in high school started 2020 well for their college indoor track and field teams.

Gardner-Webb University sophomore Josh Fischer, a 2018 Parry McCluer High School graduate and threetime state champion, placed seventh and set a personal record in the men’s weight throw at the Keydet Invitational on Friday at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility. His throw went 17.05 meters, or 55 feet, 11 inches, or, which ranks seventh all-time for GWU. In the shot put, he finished 18th with a toss of 13.75 meters, or 45 feet, 1 inch.

Wingate University freshman Danielle Crawford, a 2019 Rockbridge County High School graduate and 2019 indoor state shot put champion, placed fourth in the women’s shot put with a throw of 12.11 meters, or 39 feet, 8.75 inches, at the USC Gamecock Opener last weekend in Columbia, S.C.
