Project For Asian Brush Painter

Virginia Lloyd-Davies, Rockbridge County resident and internationally renowned Asian brush artist, will be launching her new book, “Mindful Artist: Sumie Painting” at Books & Co… Toys, Too in Lexington, on Friday, Dec.

She will be demonstrating her painting technique, inviting members of the public to try out brush and paper, and autographing books and cards from 5 to 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Walter Foster Publishing, an imprint of Quarto Publishing Group specializing in instructional books, invited Lloyd-Davies to create “Mindful Artist: Sumie Painting” this spring. All 128 pages are full of color illustrations, instructions, creative tips and artwork.

“I included over 300 images, some demonstrating how to create subjects step-by-step and others showing finished compositions to use as models,” said Lloyd-Davies. “I hope that my 43 years of experience with this technique will help beginners and advanced artists, as well as being an inspiration to all who love art. I particularly liked that the publisher wanted to pair this traditional painting form from China and Japan with the Buddhist practice of mindfulness meditation, a natural, stress-relieving combination.”

In addition to her YouTube painting channel, which topped four million views worldwide this summer, Lloyd-Davies recently discovered that her teaching videos are being used in a college in Japan and shown to classes in Europe, Taiwan, Malaysia, Russia, the Philippines and South America.

Born in Washington, D.C., of British parents, Virginia Lloyd-Davies grew up in Britain and France. In New York City she studied sumi-e and mindfulness meditation. She painted in black ink for 10 years until she apprenticed with master painter I-Hsiung Ju at Washington and Lee University. She accompanied Ju on many trips to China and Taiwan, where she studied with master painters and exhibited her paintings.

She has frequently demonstrated live on television in the U.S., Europe and China and her paintings are in collections around the world.

The book can be pre-ordered at Books & Co… Toys, Too by calling 464-8697. Signed copies can be reserved and mailed.
