Lexington OKs New Pool Contract With The YMCA

Thursday night, Lexington City Council voted to enter into a new three-year contract with the YMCA for the management of the outdoor pool.

Prior to the vote, Interim City Manager Brenda Garton announced that, since the Oct. 17 meeting, Council had received final figures for revenues from the Y. That information was sent to Gary Swink, the city’s financial director, who compared them to figures from the previous management.

Garton read Swink’s response out loud to Council.

“With the recent payment from the Y to the City for 50 percent of their net revenues from the operation of the outdoor pool during 2018-2019 seasons,” Swink said, “Our subsidy is less than it was under the previous management arrangement. It is without reservation that I recommend city that Council enter into a three-year contract with the Y for pool management.”

Then Garton herself recommended that Council enter into a three-year contract. All Council members voted for the contract, with the exception of Dennis Ayers, who abstained from the vote because his sister, Leslie Ayers, was the previous pool manager.

A representative of the YMCA of Virginia's Blue Ridge spoke during the discussion, as did two residents and pool users.
