JAMES ARMSTRONG

James Hunter Armstrong, 81, husband of Mattie Davis Armstrong, passed away on June 14, 2021, at his home in Rockbridge Baths.

James was born in Timber Ridge on May 10, 1940, son of the late Charles Raymond and Sabrina Pennington Armstrong.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years is a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Elizabeth McClure Armstrong; one brother, Charles (Charlene) Armstrong; one sister-in-law, Jean Slough Armstrong, one niece; Beth Armstrong; and two nephews, Chris and Michael Armstrong.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill” Armstrong, and a nephew, Jeff Armstrong.

He was a faithful member of Bethesda and McElwee Presbyterian churches until his illness where he was a deacon and receiving treasurer for many years. He was employed at Reeves until closing and retired from VDOT. He was a farmer and avid gardener, selling produce at the farmers markets and giving excess away to friends and neighbors.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 17, at McElwee Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Noll officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home but the family will receive friends at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in James’ memory to Bethesda and McElwee churches or Rockbridge Baths Fire Department.
