The Rockbridge Tennis Association held an open doubles tournament Sept. 27-28, welcoming five doubles teams to the Lexington Country Club courts.

John Jacobs and Jim Arnold won the championship by defeating Mark Ritter and Mike Bollinger 7-6 (7-3 tiebreak), 6-3.

In the semifinals, Jacobs and Arnold had beaten Larry Miles and Steve McElroy 6-0, 6-3, and Ritter and Bollinger had captured a 6-1, 6-1 win over Bruce Williams and Brian Steffel.

There was just one first-round match since the other three teams had byes. To advance to the semifinals, Williams and Steffell defeated 2019 Rockbridge County High School graduate Gabe Slayton and RC junior John Shomo, 6-3, 7-6, (7-4 tiebreak).

Tournament chairman Holden Branham, who is the head coach at RC, said he was pleased with how the tournament went. “It’s exciting to try and bring back this tournament that was successful for years in the past,” Branham said.
